Birmingham Post, 27th October 1970
C H A D week, the £25,000 drive to help the handicapped and disabled of the Midlands, received the good wishes of the Queen, Earl Mountbatten and stars of screen and television.
The messages were received at the Midland premiere of the MGM epic The Shoes of the Fisherman, which was given a one-night showing at Birmingham’s ABC Cinema.
The proceeds from the performance will go to CHAD – Co-ordination for Handicapped And Disabled – and the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund.
The Queen thanked the members of the Birmingham branch of the CTBF for their message of loyal greeting. Messages were also received from Sir Laurence Olivier and Barbara Jefford, who with Anthony Quinn and Sir John Gielgud, star in the film.
Midland television personalities included Miss Noele Gordon and Miss Jean Morton, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress.
The highlight of the week will be an all-star variety show in Birmingham Town Hall on Friday. CHAD is planning a meeting at Chelmsley Wood to discuss a move to co-ordinate help for the disabled and those with special needs.
